AD CHOICES

Range Times is free to read. Advertising makes that possible. This page explains how advertising works on our Site, what choices you have, and how we make sure ads never compromise our journalism.

1. How We Fund Our Journalism

Range Times does not charge readers to access our content. Instead, we are supported by advertising display ads, sponsored content, and programmatic advertising delivered through third-party networks.

Every dollar earned through advertising goes toward funding independent Canadian journalism. We believe quality news should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

2. Types of Advertising on Range Times

Display Advertising
Banner and display ads appear alongside our editorial content. These are delivered through third-party ad networks, including Google AdSense and Google Ad Manager. Display ads are clearly separated from our news content at all times.

Programmatic Advertising
Some ads on our Site are served automatically through programmatic advertising technology. These ads are matched to our content and depending on your settings may also be matched to your general interests based on your browsing behavior. You can opt out of interest-based programmatic ads. See Section 4.

Sponsored Content
Occasionally, Range Times partners with brands to produce sponsored articles, features, or newsletters. Every piece of sponsored content is clearly and prominently labelled as one of the following:

  • Sponsored
  • Paid Partnership
  • Advertisement
  • Presented by [Brand Name]

Sponsored content is produced separately from our editorial team. It does not influence our independent reporting, editorial decisions, or news coverage in any way. Our journalists do not write sponsored content.

Newsletter Sponsorships
Our newsletter may include a sponsored message from a brand partner. These are clearly labelled “Newsletter Sponsor” or “Sponsored Message” and appear separately from our editorial content.

Affiliate Links
Some articles particularly in our Business, Housing, Tech, and Life & Culture sections may contain affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, Range Times may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Affiliate links are disclosed within the article, either at the top or adjacent to the link itself. We only include affiliate links for products or services we believe are genuinely useful to our readers. Commercial relationships never dictate our editorial recommendations.

This practice complies with Ad Standards Canada (ASC) guidelines and CRTC expectations for digital publishers.

3. Our Advertising Principles

We believe advertising and journalism can coexist without compromising either. Here is what we commit to:

Editorial Independence
Advertisers do not influence our news coverage. No advertiser can request coverage, block a story, or shape our editorial decisions. If they try, we decline the relationship.

Transparency
Every piece of paid or sponsored content is clearly labelled. You will never mistake an advertisement for organic journalism on Range Times.

No Deceptive Advertising
We do not accept ads that are deliberately misleading, deceptive, or designed to look like editorial content without clear labelling.

Advertiser Standards
We reserve the right to refuse any advertisement that conflicts with our values or that promotes content we consider harmful, misleading, or inappropriate for our Canadian audience.

No Sensitive Targeting
Our advertising partners are not permitted to target our readers based on sensitive personal characteristics such as health conditions, political beliefs, religion, or ethnicity — in compliance with Canadian privacy law and Ad Standards Canada guidelines.

4. Interest-Based Advertising and Your Choices

Some ads you see on Range Times may be tailored to your general interests based on your browsing history across the web. This is called interest-based advertising or behavioural advertising. It is delivered through cookies and tracking technologies placed by our advertising partners.

You are not required to accept interest-based advertising. You have real choices.

Opt Out in Canada
The Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada (DAAC) provides a free tool to opt out of interest-based advertising from participating companies:

youradchoices.ca

Visiting this page allows you to see which advertising companies have placed cookies on your device and opt out of interest-based targeting from each one individually or all at once.

Opt Out of Google Ads
Google is one of our primary advertising partners. You can manage Google’s use of your data for advertising purposes at:

adssettings.google.com

You can also opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all websites using the browser add-on at:

tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

Network Advertising Initiative
For a broader opt-out tool covering multiple advertising networks:

optout.networkadvertising.org

Browser-Level Controls
Most modern browsers also offer built-in privacy controls that limit tracking across websites:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Enhanced Tracking Protection
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Prevent cross-site tracking
  • Edge: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Tracking prevention

Important: Opting out of interest-based advertising does not mean you will stop seeing ads on Range Times. It means the ads you see will be less personalized they will be based on the content of the page you are reading rather than your browsing history.

5. Advertising and Children

Range Times does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 and does not serve behavioural or interest-based advertising to anyone we know to be under 13. Our advertising partners are required to comply with this standard.

6. Third-Party Advertiser Privacy Policies

When third-party advertising networks serve ads on our Site, they operate under their own privacy and data policies. Range Times is not responsible for the data practices of third-party advertisers. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of our major advertising partners:

  • Google: policies.google.com/privacy
